Roster won't go away

If I'm in a game and use my function keys to adjust volume (specifically F3/Fn-F3), a roster list comes up and won't go away unless I disconnect and go back to the server list. Can anyone offer any advice on this? I've just been trying to avoid changing volume levels in the game.
