Under OPTIONS - then VOICE tab.

By default, the "Enable voice in this game" box is checked and the "Boost microphone gain" box is checked.  Both boxes have a check mark in them.  Also, "Voice transmit volume*" and "Voice receive volume*" are on full and pegged completely to the right or full on, for sending and receiving voice in the game.

I didn't want voice on so I unchecked both the boxes and pegged both "Voice transmit volume" and "Voice receive volume*" completely to the left, or off -then click APPLY -then OK, which closed the OPTIONS menus.  When I clicked on OPTIONS again to open the menu's and clicked the VOICE tab, the "Boost microphone gain" box was checked again, and the "Voice transmit volume*" was again, pegged all the way to the right or full on.   "Enable voice in this game" remained unchecked, and "Voice receive volume*" remained unchanged and pegged to the left.

When the OPTIONS menu is opened, and the OFF changes in the VOICE menu are made, then OPTIONS ok'd and closed, and then OPTIONS opened again, the "Boost microphone gain" box is checked again, all on its own, and the "Voice transmit volume*" is pegged completely to the right again, all on its own.

The bug doesn't stop there tho. And I think this is where the termite hackers are coming in. Someone who turns everything in VOICE off and then closes OPTIONS will probably not check their voice menu again for quite awhile.

IF a hacker can crack the game and cause the "Test Microphone" button to be digitally depressed, the check box for "Enable voice in this game" rechecks itself again, all on its own.  The hacker then must digitally cause the "Stop microphone test" button to depress.  "Enable voice in this game" stays checked, all on its own, along with the check box for microphone gain, and full transmit volume.  -Then the hacker digitally clicks APPLY or OK.

What this does is give the hacker complete voice access into your room from your computer. The communication becomes two-way if the game owner ONLY unchecked the boxes and left the transmit AND receive settings untouched or completely pegged to the right, clicked OK and then closed the OPTIONS menu. It is becoming very quickly a common hack, at least for the western servers and north to Chicago, Illinois and south to Dallas, Texas.  Those are the only servers I have been able to reach in extremity, so far.

It appears that in order to do the hack, the player or players MUST be active on the game map. Meaning, they must have a character ALIVE and in the game.  Usually, this appears to be just standing unmoving at the spawn point or some quiet place on the map where the character will not be killed or disturbed, while the hacker does his or her hack job.  Apparently, in first-person shooters, killing the character also kills the hack process.

Counter-Strike, all versions up to and including CS-Source (I haven't played CS:GO) have the same problem of characters standing around doing nothing while the game owners hack.  I am assuming that it is a server side hack.  Meaning, some servers of GE_Source and CS_Source are up ONLY for the purpose of hacking other unsuspecting players computers via the game they are playing, on-line.  In CS, I'm not sure where they are getting in on the several types of Counter-Strike games, but hacking the games is common and some even brag about it in CHAT.

Getting back to Golden Eye v5.0, the current hack is thru VOICE and "Enable voice for this game" by digitally depressing the "Test Microphone" button, which rechecks, "Enable voice in this game", and a hack for the "APPLY" or "OK" button.

The BUG is a technical programmer bug in the "Voice transmit volume" bar pegging to the right, all on its own, and the check boxes, for "Boost microphone gain", rechecking itself, all on its own.  The bug that rechecks "Enable voice in this game", can be manually demonstrated by clicking the "Test Microphone" AFTER all of the fore-going in VOICE are turned off, the OPTIONS menu closed, and then re-opened.

For the termite hack, it appears the OPTIONS menu does NOT need to be opened again for the check boxes to be re-checked or the transmit volume bar to be all the way to the right again. Meaning, the changes appear to be done below the GUI (Graphical User Interface).  In other words, at the interface where the machine language of the motherboard talks to the software running on it.

The bugs for Voice aspects re-enabling after being turned off.

Got a fix?  :]

What is gained by listening to someone while they play a game? Seems like a waste of time hack to me.

I don't think we have any control over the behavior of those sliders, that may be an engine thing.

I agree that there does not appear to be a lot gained by listening to someone else with Voice transmit re-enabled thru a hack, and "cracking" on the other players in the game.

The [BUG] in the Voice options menu is definitely a program bug within GE_S_v5.0 and offers the opportunity for not only hackers to listen to the unsuspecting players in-game comments, but also, listening to the immediate environment for where the computer is located, which could become a devastating event for people at that players computer location.  "Enable voice in this game" via the check box becoming re-enabled is definitely a hack from another computer and from someone(s) who, probably are playing on the same game server as you; possibly even the Admins.

They possibly are hacking thru the Steam engine, the Steam servers, and possibly, thru the SDK Base 2007 platform.

Further, I have also noticed a ping problem with what appears to be "lag jumping" of character movement in the on-line game, even tho a check of the ping rate shows 30 or less, as one example, with NO apparent changes in ping rate (10 pings or less,) from the TAB in-game GUI menu for checking ping rate.

Depending on the skills of the hacker and what is available at Steam as "hackable", this MIGHT indicate that GE_Source_v5.0 VOICE is being used to communicate to remote computers and their users, "elsewhere" at computers not even in the current game-play or even on the server.  Meaning, your computer is potentially being used as a node and jump point for questionable conversations and potential questionable data transfers that might be difficult to track.  This particular potential can be compared to "Phone Phreaking" back in the 70's and up to the early 2000's, when phones were mostly hard-line wired thru the phone companies.  The internet and your computer are the "new" phone lines.

I have also noticed that the on-line game map occasionally wavers strangely, and shortly after that, when the game ends and the map changes, I am sometimes locked out of the new game map and stuck in what looks similar to Spectate, but without any control button options to "look around".  This is a minimum of bandwidth usage, since all I can do is "stay put" and mouse from one side of my screen to the other while looking at the same scenery.  Waiting for the next map changes nothing and I am still in "stuck mode".  Basically, what I must do to get out of it is disconnect from the game server and log back on.  Then I can play again.

However with the above, checking the VOICE tab settings has always shown that a hack took place and that "Enable voice in this game" is enabled again with a check in the checkbox.

Golden Eye Source v5.0 is a great gamers game.  I find it unfortunate that unscrupulous individuals and unscrupulous groups see the game not as entertainment, but for furthering their own, potentially, highly questionable activities.

Thanks for getting back so quick.

tl;dr'd, but this voice tab in the engine was used before Steam Community and proper Steam options have been implemented. If you want to disable voice chat, you have to go in Steam's settings and disable it there, then restart your game and it should be disabled

I'm not sure exactly what you mean about the VOICE tab being in effect before the Steam Community.

[BUG] The VOICE tab I disabled while I was in-game and logged on Steam and again when I was off-line, just to check to see if off-line made a difference . The disabling had no effect on the VOICE bug mentioned in detail above.  VOICE still rebuilt itself one tier step at a time.  The "Enable voice in this game" checkbox is checked when a hack is done on the programming for that tab.

I also went to SETTINGS, while on-line at STEAM.  The boost microphone checkbox was already undone. I did move the sliders completely over to the left or off position for transmit and receive.  Started Golden Eye up, on-line, went thru the steps of turning everything off, closed the game out, then restarted Golden Eye.

Changing Steam Account settings for voice had no effect what-so-ever on the VOICE bug I described in the above posts.  The VOICE options still re-built themselves up to but not including rechecking the "Enable voice in this game".  In short, disabling voice in the Steam Account settings had no effect on the VOICE tab rebuilding itself to the "on" positions.

Counter-Strike has been a favored game of mine. It also has voice chat but I keep it switched off in the online in-game menu.  I can turn voice on or off while I am playing, if I so choose.

The problem has not been do I or do I not want voice while playing Golden Eye.  I have turned voice on while playing Golden Eye before, but like Counter-Strike, I also turn it off from the menu for the game. The problem is that the VOICE tab rebuilds automatically from the off positions, leaving the "voice transmit and boost microphone" always on. The short of it is that all a hacker need do is enable the final checkbox, "Enable voice for this game" from his or her computer while playing Golden Eye.  That is the problem, that the hack can be done because the programming for the VOICE tab menu in Golden Eye is trash and needs reprogramming.  No other multiplayer game I have has this problem with voice.

Termite hackers must not be given the option of making a law abiding person jump thru hoops just because they can.  I don't know about you, but I don't like to play fetch.

As a gamer, I do not want voice switched off for ALL my games.  There are times I want it on.  Changing it in my account with Steam MIGHT shut voice off for Golden Eye but it will do so for all other games I have also.  Not good.

If you are an ace programmer, how hard can it be to rewrite a few lines of code, in regards to the VOICE tab menu, so that this type of hack can not take place on Golden Eye voice.  Granted, the reprogramming of voice might take awhile but the wait will be well received by the Golden Eye gamers, once they know.

I'm really having a difficult time understanding why this particular programming issue is the way it is anyway. The program parameters for a more or less secure voice while gaming have been around for a long time.  This current bug I brought up is like someone tried to reinvent the wheel and screwed up. Why change it if it already works securely?

It's a great multiplayer game. There shouldn't be just a sign up that says, No Trespassing or I will switch my Steam account settings off.  Probably wouldn't stop the hack anyway, since the hack operates below the Graphical User Interface (GUI).  Fetch isn't my game and it shouldn't be part of Golden Eye.  The hole in the voice tab is a security issue.  It needs to be fixed with a patch or update.  That's what this topic area is about, right? Not giving hackers more elbow room and leisure at their past-time and improving the game.

The responsibility for improving the game belongs with the people who want to talk about their experiences with the game, here, and with those who are willing to fix the bugs and work with the people who talk about what they found out. Steam won't do it.  But they will play the game for you through their servers to your computers.

I don't have a problem with Steam except their draconian need to have me play games on their Steam servers. If I could play this fan game of Golden Eye without Steam, I would.

I don't know how you managed to link this to a hack, but that's not going to happen. Also as Killermonkey said, we don't have access to anything related to the menus and even less how the voice works, that's from the Engine and we don't have full access.

If you want to disable voice completely forever in GE:S until you decide to get it back, do "voice_enable 0" on console without quotes and it'll be disabled. If you want it back, change the "0" with "1" and you'll get it back. If you don't want to do this everytime you start the game, just go to your install at steam/steamapps/sourcemods/gesource/config/config.cfg open that file and add voice_enable 0 somewhere.

I'm locking this topic, its not a hack, just insinuation at this point. If a hacker can turn on the checkbox to enable voice in game, they can do ANYTHING to you. If you are so paranoid about voice recording just unplug all microphones and turn off the microphones in the windows sound settings. DONE.

Pro tip: stop creating posts that are a wall of text, quality over quantity is key to getting your point across
