Need help setting up listen server to host my friends and I

I've been trying to setup a server so that I could host and play in matches against my friends. Do I need to download the 4.2.1 server files or will it work from simply the regular download files?

When I create a server I uncheck the LAN option

Then once in i've tried a billion combinations of sv_lan 0, ip (my IP here), heartbeat, and changelevel (ge_complex etc)

Its always shows up in the lan game. When I right click and show server settings it always says my local ip 192.168.xxx and not my public IP

I have 27015 forwarded through my router. Any help?

Have you tried sending them your ip to connect to?

whatismyip.com

then send that to them, and have them in console type:

connect 72.00.000.000

of course use your ip.
