Applying for level designer
« on: July 10, 2011, 01:34:12 pm »

Firstly hello, this is my first time posting here so I'll introduce myself.

My name is Craig Tinney, but I most commonly go by the online name, The Giblets of Jesus. I've been using the source engine to make a variety of different maps for around 3 years including 2 attempts at re-making old bond game multiplayer maps.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I was actually contacted by one of the GE:S dev team (JcFerggy) a short while back in regards to one of my reamkes, Ctf_Skryail_2010;

I'm not sure what state the GE:S adaptation that he's been working on is going, but I should hope it's running smoothly and in more than capable hands.
I've also started work on recreating Fort Knox (another Nightfire map), although but this point its just a series of dev blocks, after being initially asked to do so by JcFerggy.

Through my last 3 years of using the source engine I have built up a solid understanding of advanced brush and entity manipulation, as well as numerous different methods of approaching and solving technical and practical problems. I also have a basic knowledge of texture creation if needs be.

I can be reached through the following methods if necessary;

E-mail: ctinney94@gmail.com

At this point something we really need are level designers who can make unique props and textures for their maps, as for the most part our LD positions are pretty much full.

Are you able to do either of those things?

One thing I'd say is GE:S is quite a step up from the level of detail in CS:S maps, we use a lot more geometry and heavy use of models and we're leaning heavily towards 100% custom content from this point onwards.

You say you have basic knowledge of how to create textures, do you have some examples you could show us?

Currently I cannot make any 3D models and my texturing only really goes as far as making non looping textures such as these banners;

I'm always willing to learn, but if your not interested, I understand.

The question is would you be willing to learn some (basic) 3d modelling and improve on your texturing abilities?

On gg_power the floating stairs kinda killed it for me.

Counter strike maps just aren't gonna cut it, sorry. There is very little atmosphere, design ideology, optimization... your texture work is not to any level to which it would be useful either.

Sorry dude, this is a no from me.

I've talked with several other developers today and we decided no as well. The maps we have left to make are going to need very skilled and experienced level designers to pull off.

I do appreciate your interest though, and hope you make some third party maps for GE:S. If you want ideas to improve your maps and learn new skills you can IM me on Steam anytime.

Just do third party bud, put out some great maps for the mod and earn a good rep as a mapper. I'd also recommend taking a look at luchador's work, especially Casino. Also, Silo recently had some work done on it by Luchador, all maps will probably get touched up to this standard at some point.

I agree, You might not be part of the dev team, But releasing third-party maps will get you a good reputation and your maps will most likely be on every server's rotation. Most of us always love to see new maps released, So pretty much everyone will appreciate what you will have done if you release some good stuff.

Thanks for applying, and we'd like to say we appreciate your professional manner - which is what we require but don't always get.

So to confirm this is a no at this time from the team. We encourage you to keep at your efforts and if you like, take up our advice to map for our 3rd party community. Through that you will get feedback from highly skilled devs, plus the community - and grow more custom inspired source talents to which many now-developers did through this community gateway.

It's a proven path, and definitely one we recommend. Good luck and hope to see you around the place. =D

Alright, I'll take you all up on your advice and continue with the map I was working on for 3rd party release, thanks again for you time :).

One last thing actually, the skyrail build that being handled by... whoever has it, what will become of it. Are any of you planning to use it as a basis of creating a new map or is it just being used as a reference?

Skyrail is a 3rd party map that is being done as a cooperative effort between me, Ferggy, and Falco. It is just a map in which we wanted to recreate for Goldeneye: Source because it was probably one of the most played maps in Nightfire. It is still in the early alpha stages and the build you saw was an old build probably. I will be doing the landscaping for it mostly while most of the buildings/architecture will be done by Ferggy. Further information is still pending and will be discussed later. :)
