Idear.

I have difficulty taking seriously any presenter who says 'idear.'

Meanwhile, all we're talking about is saying "phew, we finally have enough cores to use fractal formulas instead of just lines and matrix ops".  But which would you rather spend your cores on?  Unlimited detail on an LCD panel that only has 1,310,720 pixels worth of detail to show you, or real time raytracing so you can see the reflection of the sky on a pond in the chrome of your opponent's sports car?


Since I have a gigantic brain and lots of spare cycles at 'work,' I've given some thought to the near future of graphics, i.e., what can I do to make an engine to sell for millions of dollars, and this is not what I have decided to do, so it loses.

Looks like BS to me. I can smell BS when it wafts around. Companies don't scoff at ideas if they are good, sound, and reproducible (which he said a company did). Either way, you don't just have to recognize the number of points on the screen, that would produce terribly aliased images. You have to consider their neighbors as well, thus the statement about the point system is also flawed. Furthermore, whats the point in "unlimited" detail anyway if you have that fundamental limitation in your monitor anyway.

The only part that seems to be realistic is the part about comparing it to the "color race", but thats like a good selling point ; Doesnt mean the product isn't a sham.

Lol a noob talking about highly advanced graphic processing technics. (well, i'm also noob when it comes to things like that)
I don't think he's actually involved into this product, he just got some video footage and a rought idea of what they mean.
Even on a resolution of 1024x768, the computer would have to process the point cloud in a much higher resolution, so when he said on 1024x768 it would only have to process this certain ammount of points, he's simply wrong.
Also terms like unlimited detail are far away from any seriouse statement and in conflict with the screen resolution depending ammount of points to calculate.

If this technic will be ever used in computer games, i'd apprechiate it, because it could lead to new graphical experience.
My guess is, there'll be combinations of both technics, point clouds for organic shapes, polygones for the rest.

I don't know anything at all about graphics processing, but I have a couple questions about this:

1.) Does it basically work kind of like motion-capture technology that they use for movies and sports video games?

2.) Wouldn't this just encourage people to buy ridiculously large monitors (or tvs) so that they could have "more" detail?

3.) The human eye can't see much less than 1/5 of a millimeter, so  doesn't it seem counter-intuitive to make a graphics technology that is contingent on pixel-proportions?

4.)  (just a statement)  I like how they used older games with out-dated graphics to fluff themselves up.  To me, their crappy pyramids and weird little jungle town didn't look any better than anything I've seen from the latest Unreal engine.

5.) Was anyone else bothered by their wanton use of Mozart?


Personally, I can't wait for somebody to start making computer monitors / games that have built-in facial recognition technology

The concept works in theory. Whilst the video clearly avoids explaining exactly how unlimited detail works, what I 'got' from the video is that everything is built out of meshes of sprites so instead of having a polygon for every three points, there's a sprite for every point, and there only has to be the same number of sprites drawn on screen as the number of pixels.

'Unlimited Detail' is a complete misnomer though, if you look at their gallery you can see that everything looks very fuzzy and blurry. I suppose that's because they're using sprites instead of polygons in which case their method defeats their goal. Besides, aren't each of those sprites rendered on polygons?

Anyway, this is the power of polygons:

'Unlimited Detail' pales in comparison.

Mangley you are confusing the point.

Polygons are extremely inefficient. They break down after a certain number, that number is when the amount of time to render the scene takes longer than 0.0333 seconds to complete (or 30 frames per second). At this point is when your eye can detect most, noticeably, a stuttering in the image.

A rendering is more like 2-3 HOURS per FRAME (from that movie I gather is how long it might have taken). Which is quite different.

The idea with Unlimited Detail is that you can have the detail you want for the scene without this limitation anymore. You can represent millions of points at the same time it would take to represent 1000 polygons.

Sprites are a whole separate matter, and actually are polygons (1-sided, 2D). They are using color values at points in 3D space and cramming in as many points as they can (ie. the separation of each point goes to zero). The images are fuzzy because they are probably doing a great deal of post-processing of the picture to limit the amount of aliasing that is caused by the relatively small sampling rate your monitor has compared to the detail of the picture (it's a mathematical relationship called Nyquist Rate).

1. "Unlimited" my ass.
2. The guy doesn't seem to know what he's talking about.
3. He never really explains the technology.
4. He uses the same few talking points five or six times in a row.
5. The method he describes is completely unfeasible for games that can't lag for reaction time's sake. (there is a balance between graphics and gameplay which must not be destroyed, or else the game won't be fun)
6. I get what he means when he says that it renders only what he looks at, but imagine the computer load generated by looking around...*shudder*
