Programming - Looking to be a part of something
« on: December 20, 2006, 08:33:15 am »

Hey guys what’s going on? My name is Ryan, I am 20 years old currently working at my Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science at WMU - very fun stuff. Love to code - still learning like all of us but I love it. We mainly worked with C#, but I see the elders still use C++ I respect that, not much different at all. To be quite honest I highly doubt, if privileged, that I am going to take your project and take off to new heights with it. I really am looking to help as much as I can, be a part of something special, learn as much as I can, and to help you guys out with anything in the future. I understand you guys are pretty prestigious with who you pick up. It shows, the game is looking very sexy so far ;-). I'll understand if you guys can’t afford to pick up a guy like me - whether it may slow you down, your roster is near full, the open slots are open for fellow bad asses, or whatever it may be. I'd die for an opportunity to learn, and give everything I can for such a neat project and group of people.

Alright so let’s get down to business.

Position applied for: Programming - anything you guys could use me for.
-I am just going to note that I sort of am a jack of all trades, I have dealt with a bit of everything, but my passion has become programming :).

Experience:
2+ Years of college level programming in C# (Reading into differences in C++, and taking Java)
Flash Animations
Web development
Visual Basic

Programs Used:
Microsoft Visual Studio 2003, 2005 (Prefer 2003)
Microsoft Visual Basic 6
Dreamweaver
Microsoft FrontPage
Adobe (Macromedia) Flash
Notepad - Best creation ever haha

Sample Work:
I have the labs that we did for programming class if you guys honestly want to see those let me know. Other than that I am still looking to make my first project be worth while, even if its doing the smallest things for you guys, I would love to.

Email: jusifdg@gmail.com

AIM\AOL: jusifdg

Alrighty guys, any questions get back at me, and thanks for the opportunity. I look forward to hearing from you.

-Ryan

Thanks for the app. I'm not a programmer so I can't speak to your qualifications - I'm sure some of them will be by to do that. I'll say that we can always use more help in that area though, so good luck with it!

Thanks a lot man. What is your expertise here?

Also, I am very sure I could use a boost, and even as an assignment could I possibly be pointed in the direction of some reading such as an online article or a book to grab that would help me help you guys? I am looking to keep busy to be as much help as I possibly can be. Thanks guys.

Haha is everyone that is applying everything but a programmer haha? I was thinking of applying for the website or maps, but I seen that one guy get turned down and he was probably much better than me. I like how you guys want "beautiful" recreations of maps. The website is usually handled by 1 or 2 guys, they aren't that hard to maintain, but I definately could give anyone a helping hand in that in addition to programming. Even if its just throwing some content up.
But yeah, definately I can never get enough programming in a day :). Thanks for the vote bro. (What do you do here (position) for this project?)

We're both level designers, I'm sure some of the programmers will stop by in short order though.

I think if you have not been experienced in game programming, im not sure if they need another coder. There is 3 pretty good guys that do both general programming and experienced gaming wise.

Im still not sure if there is a website guy, i keep forgetting as the team has been through like 5  ::)

I'll wait to see what Scott has to say (our lead programmer), but as far as I can tell you seem to know what you are doing and know a little of everything in areas, which is a big plus for us. We really need a website so, if you don't get on board as a programmer you could probably help us with our website as well.

Alright cool guys, thanks for the considerations. Like I said before even if i don't turn out to be what your looking for is there anyway I can still tag along and learn from you guys? Such as look at what you guys have already done/coded, you guys have came a very long way, and learn from it. I am a quick learner, I am sure I can pick up a bunch from the lead programmer. Sorry that this project would be my first true gaming experience, but i am really looking forward to it :). Thanks guys.

Good, someone who actually has used Microsoft Brand C++-like Programming Language Non-Standards-Compliant Compiler and can  teach me how to get used to the bloody thing.

(Backstory in a nutshell: Because Valve crippled their code with MS-only crap, I haven't been able to write anything for this glorious mod.  Big thank-you to Redmond for compelling me to need to download hundreds of megabytes over dialup to install a compiler.)

Haha yeah, I am of the next generation I guess where we get to use all the fancy stuff, and not the old hardcore stuff. It has its pros and cons. Pros: easier to do things, and the main thing, much better organization. Cons: Don't feel as much as a bad ass while coding (haha), and maybe take concepts for granted and I think with the old stuff you actually truely knew it all. I assume these days there are some folks out there that claim to know it, but just click around and figure a few things out so they say they know it. So we will see. Lol I feel bad for you having to use dial up and download all that crap haha.

Later guys.

sigh everything is learned tho

Nobody was born and magically knew coding, they learned, so it doesnt matter if you click around and find out what to do in a easy to use program, its no different in the end to sitting down with a big fat text book based around notepad code strings that take up 2 pages and do the same thing.

Yeah I know, but I was wondering in my free time if any of the coders know of any good readings that they could point me towards that would help me in game programming, or what kind of stuff they are dealing with.

Hey there,

I am one of the programmers here. You look like you would be a good addition, but Scott will need to review you. Really, I think that any help we can get is great, contribution is nice, even if the code isn't perfect, others can improve on it. Wait for Scott to post, but I really appreciate the fact that you want to help.

No problem at all man, it is a hell of a privilege. Being an actual programmer for the team, do you have anywhere you would like to point me to for information? I have been sort of bored and want to read up on somethings to improve my skills for you guys. I was lookin at getting this: http://www.gametutorials.com/gtstore/pc-35-6-gametutorials-squared-cd.aspx I can get 20% off for being a student so it isnt that bad of a deal. Would you recommend that, and anything else (books or webpages)? Thanks man.

Hi again,

In order to work on a mod like this, you need to learn alot of things. One thing I recommend, is to learn how to comment code. You aren't the only one working on it, others may not want to analyze it to understand. Also, SVN experience doesn't hurt. Basically, you are in a team enviorment. Communication is key, so we need a few ways to contact you. Also, can you please post some examples? :P

Yes I agree comments are definately helpful, I will follow any format or thouroughness of commenting that you guys wish. As far as examples, I mentioned in my first post I have labs from school that I made if you would like those. (They are written in 'C#' using VS2003). I recently have been lookin at the differences in C++ from C#, I am sure I will figure them out soon enough, most of the code is the same. Additional ways of contacting me:

We're a little busy with the release but will be getting back to you as time returns...  Just to let you know, I put every applicant through hell week (kidding...).  But I do come up with a unique 'test' per applicant.  Not rocket science, but it gives me a chance to see what you can really do.  All I can tell you is that it is generally source related and every test I put someone through is normally something they are already working on.  Using pimpin' as an example, he was working on a plug-in called 'goldenadmin' and I had him do some stuff within that since he was familiar with it.

I don't really want to see labs...  Labs tell me you can copy from a book and add the missing ';'.  :)

Desired skill-sets:
 - SVN is everything.  Simply put you must know this well.  (download and toy around with TortoiseSVN).  This goes beyond just knowing how to use it, but knowing how to work with it in a team environment.  In other words, don’t break us…
 - Know Steam and the Source Engine...  know how the engine works with mods, how things are loaded, etc…
 - Have a good enough grasp on programming.  'good enough grasp' means that you will be able to navigate the bible and modify pieces of it.  If you know the SDK, that might be enough to get on this team.  We don't have time or desire to 'teach' the basics.
 - Good debugging techniques.  The better you are at finding your own bugs before they become real bugs, the better life is for all of us.
 - Experience with other peoples code.  This means a few things...  For one, you’re jumping into a code base that isn't yours, and you're expected to work in it...  Also, at times I might framework out a piece of code that works with other pieces of code or is a critical part to the mod, and you might be expected to pick it up from there and finish it.
 - Text-messaging is outdated; programmers use VOIP.  Make sure you have a mic and can communicate with us on a regular basis.
 - Know when to ask and when to dig…  Major issues come up all the time… What would you do?
  a) ahh crap, something is broken or difficult… Ring Ring…
  b) Spend more time, possibly solve it.  At least have a good understanding of the code in question and get a better idea of what you need to be asking (if anything).
It depends.  We are a team, and work together on a lot of things quite often.  But it slows down the pack if you can’t pull your own weight as well.  My point is, if you’re at a point where you’re self-sufficient, that is IDEAL!  We want you to ask, but I would much rather break you into a habit of sharing with us than ‘stop asking us’…  ?
 - Know a utility language...  Sometimes you might need/want to do something in a scripting language (Perl/Python/PHP/etc...), it is just good to have under your belt and find ways to use it.  Anything from a Toss-Away script, to better searching/replacing (and more...), to something we might find useful every day...
 - LUA Scripted game-plays will be in the upcoming release, so if you work with these and help us to improve them, it would be good.

I could go on, but I better get back to programming… You should hear from us in the next week.

Thank you for the reply Scott. I am going to play with the SVN software in the morning...well later this morning ;). I have a good understanding of programming, and I have been looking at c++ code just about everyday. I also did a few of the tutorials on valve's developer page to get an idea of how the dll files are compiled, but I could definitely use some more assistance. It looks like they have it all set up pretty user friendly to where everything that we actually will code is just calling existing classes and functions - creating new classes and entities. I am sure I can pick it up really fast, if u can afford the time to show me a few things and let me play with it. As far as asking questions, that's the last thing I do. I love tackling a problem, and giving it all I got. I rarely fail at solving, but if I do its nice to know we have guys like you on the team. If you have anything you want me to look at as far as basics - intermediate stuff, before I hear from you in the next week let me know, I would be glad to spend time reading it. Thanks

PS Hey nowhere I made a new sig for these forums. I hope you like it :)
