Need help choosing a CPU for server
« on: June 02, 2009, 09:42:58 pm »

Im gonna build a Goldeneye Source Server/Unreal Tournament 2004/UT3 server.

Each game server will run differently like GES server will be online a few days then UT3 will be running whenever I feel like playing.. same with UT2004.

I dont want to spend more than 50 for a cpu. I found this and its only 29 with free shipping

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103189

Can anyone with experince tell me if it can handle those games i will serve?

it will also be loaded with 1gb of ram
and 160gb hd

Thanks for your help guys  :)

edit: I noticed semprons suck ass. I was looking at tomshardware charts and the semprons vs amd x2 or amd single core non semprons. The regular single core amds are much faster than semprons. I guess Ill just buy a dual core. oh well.

I'm not much of a processor expert (It's te only part on a PC I've never replaced because I'm too afraid of screwing something up) but I know that a friend of mine used to run 3 GE:S 3.0.1 servers on a 2.2 GHz Pentium 4.

The processor you picked would probably work well from what I can tell, It would probably run 2-3 GE:S servers smoothly.

Need to know more information. AMD/INTEL? What socket? possibly what motherboard do you have.

What kind of bandwidth are you pushing?

I run my two home OWS servers(the classic servers) off a AMD x2 3800+ (OC'ed to 2.7GHz). Seems to do fine. But the problem I have is lack of bandwidth and my ISP likes to block certain areas(why it can't be the testing server anymore, wouldn't allow some people to join).

If you can pick up a cheap Dual Core should be enough, but again most the issue most likely is going to be your bandwidth.

Need to get Kujo, or maybe VC to look at this. Kujo runs the Bradley Uni. servers, and seems well educated in server type support.

In my honest opinion, I'd aim for something like 12-14. I'm not judging by your hardware power; I'm judging by the gameplay you get on a very crowded server, like the one you described.
