I tend to think that one may as well just grab the Orange Box, as it improves your life anyway.

$20 or $30 for $80 or $100 worth of games, and the content covers most everything. Sadly, my parents are super-sensitive about game ratings :P, so I only have Portal.

kraid:
Portal is a source game, so you should be able to install the "source SDK base" & "source SDK Base - Orangebox" found in steam under Tools.

Once installed you'll be able to access the whole world of Source mods.
Always restart steam after installing a mod, or it won't show up.

PS: good to see some parents showing interrest in what their son is playing.
I guess GES would get the same rating as HL2/HL2DM got, so i bet you wouldn't be allowed to play this one, too.

7FoX:
in few words, the cheapest way to play GE:S is purchasing HL2DM ??

am I right ? :P

kraid:
Yes, you're right. But if you feel like you would like to play TF2/HL2/any other source game beside GES, you could also get this game.
