I never installed half life 2 deathmatch, I only bought it for the Orangebox to play Goldeneye. 

My computer should supprt it, it's a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4527 (Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor T2080, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB Hard Drive, SuperMulti DVD Drive, Vista Premium)

seems like it came close, I can definitely shoot the person up until point they die.  However, when I get shot or die, or I kill someone else, it stops working.

Yes.  It runs smooth until I get shot or am shooting someone else.
