Indiana jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull
« on: May 30, 2008, 09:24:12 am »

First movie I seen at the cinema in about 6 years

It certainly didnt dissapoint, certainly on par with the visual spectacle of modern movies yet not "omg cool specialFX" you just took the action as action, and definitely staying true to the past movies. It is basically a stunning meld of all 3 movies ideology and tone. Using the late 50's russian thirst for power over america as an evil, in place of the 30's nazi thirst for supremist land domination.

About the only bad side of this movie experience for me was the audience, if you love indiana jones and have heard anything lackluster or bad about this movie, dont listen ; book tickets and go on a busy night when cheering may ensue.

My screening was more comfortable atmosphere for me going in, yet the smaller audience also meant no cheering no clapping at the credits, and people even laughed in wrong moments where clearly some faith in higher thinking was being presented for you to be taken into a world. I dont care because i felt all the right moments internally and was cheering inside.

Ill make some spoilers discussion points a little later, im sure a lot of you have seen it but this is to get a little sway on the side of this being a killer movie for indie fans.

Meh.  It had its moments, but I had a sinking feeling in my stomach when there was a CG groundhog in the first 15 seconds.  Overall I thought it was ok.

I didn't have a problem with the old Indy, that actually felt about right to me cause he was kinda teaching the young kid and wasn't pretending to be young.

There were a couple things I didn't like though.
Spoiler for Hiden:
1. Aliens, really? Thats the script that was so great that it made them make another one?  Really? Indy films have always had the supernatural, which is iffy enough as it is, but aliens was too over the top.  That skull they were dragging around the whole time was clearly plastic, and the flying saucer at the end was bullshit.  Plus there wasn't really any reason for them to kill the russian chick, and the same sorta thing happened in the last one anyway.
2.  CG Groundhogs.  Nuff said.
3.  Instant teamkills with flying monkeys.  Really? Just cause you grab a vine, suddenly a hundred monkeys, instead of owning your shit for invading their territory, swing with you and attack a russian jeep like they are under mind control? Plus that whole king kong swinging through the jungle was lame anyway.

So yea, it had some good moments, but it had some bad moments too.

Interesting points.

Spoiler for Hiden:
1. Well, history suggests in hard science the idea that it isnt iffy. The cup of the christ is more of an iffy subject in science. So i mean for you im sure aliens are over the top which is your opinion entitled, but bare in mind spielberg himself has helmed 3+ movies with straight up alien content, and lucas of course believes or can belive and imagine alien societies. This story was masked behind a historical truth (or theory at weakest) so to speak. The thing i have to counter your russian chick thing, is that they are supremely higher beings, in touch with everything they'd know she was intending evil and wanted to basically use them for only her selfish exploits. Hence they punished her.
2. Agreed, but i laughed a "little" so thought overall it was worth it, im sure it marked the child demo higher.
3. It made for a good spectacle

I vote Meh as well, it had good points visually and action wise but it is hard to make any movie close to as good as Raiders of the Lost Ark or Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and the new one is just not as tight a story.

Spoiler for Hiden:
> it had a few story lines that were kinda pointless then never mentioned again
> for the love of god stop letting the person who has turned you over to be killed twice tag along with you, then almost get sucked into a vortex for (by this point betrails at least 5+)
> if ever in a nuclear bombing get in a lead lined fridge and it will all work out fine event though the house you were in was leveled and you were thrown who knows how far & high
> the have access to 'all the US government best secretes' and limit themselves to an alien corps, which by the way we should have put more than those 3 guys at the gate (mabey they spent too much on the warehouse to staff it properly)
> the legendary gift for returning the head back sucked ( mabey they just dont like soviets/russians )
