A few questions
« on: March 17, 2008, 07:39:59 am »

OK, sorry I am new, so don't blast me, but I just have a few questions:

1) What are the system requirements?
2) Do I need HL2 to run this game?
3) How many people play?

The system requirements are similar to Half Life 2 Deathmatch and Counter-Strike: Source.

You need a game that comes with the Source SDK, the list is here: http://storefront.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=search&category=16

The amount of people that still play Beta 1.0 is pretty small, but Beta 1.1h has a pretty dedicated group of people that play it.

Thanks, damn, I don't know if I can run it too well.

OK, here are the official system requirements (I presume minimum)

1.2 GHz processor, 256 MB RAM, DirectX 7.0c or higher (included)

I meet all of that, but my card is integrated. I think I will run it but I dont know how well, what do you think?

I have

2.66 GHz P4, 512 RAM, and my card is integrated

Hopefully by the end of May I will have enough to get a nice new rig, but I want to start enjoying GE:Source as soon as possible?

Any thoughts?

A little more RAM and a GFX-Card would be enought to play Source-Based Games.
If you have the Money to buy a new PC, then go for it.
Cause there are many new Technologies like PCI-e Graphics, 64bit CPU, DDR-RAM 2 (and 3), S-ATA instead of IDE,... .

If you don't have it, you have to make a decission:
1. save money till you have enought to buy a new PC
or
2. Buy RAM and GFX-Card to power up the System.

If you just wanna play older Games like HL2 or CSS then '2.' would be the best Choice.
But if you wanna play Crisis or UT3 someday, better choose '1.'  .

Yea, I'm actually already saving for a new pc and I think I'll be able to buy it (from DSO) at the end of may

But for now, can that run GE: Source on low at least? It meets the min specs

Well... I'm, at the moment, back on an old computer. It's a P4 1.8GHz, with 512 RAM and a dedicated GFX (64 Mb of VRAM). For a 640x480 game with everything low, it's okay, if you dont take too much care to the framerate :P. So your GFX will be, maybe, not enough.

Well, at the moment I'm in the process of acquiring some new gear to upgrade (Ie: Mobo, RAM, Gfx), so I can play GE more smoothly.

Here's what I'm running in my current rig:

2.66Ghz Intel Celeron D Processor (Single Core), 512mb DDR2 RAM, Integrated Graphics, Asus P5VDC-MX mobo.

A real shit box at the moment, but here's the kicker. I can run GE:S Beta 1.1h on medium graphics, on 1024 x 768 screen resolution.

The only levels I can play WITHOUT lag, are Temple and its variants, ie: Temple Classic, MK-A2, MK-A5; Complex and its variants,  Egyptian, Library Classic, Carrington Institute (with lag from time to time), Caves, and Citadel.

The ones that lag so bad its not even worth playing are Siberia, Cradle, Control, Facility and its variants, Bunker, and Archives.

Thats the reason why you may see me leave server if the map changes to those.

Anways, bottom line is on some maps I can run GE:S reasonably well. But when I get my new gear, I'll say goodbye to LAG with any map!

Good stuff.
