When I join a server, the progress bar window appears, 2 bars into the process it pauses then I get a message "connection failed after 4 attempts". I have checked my firewall and it is not blocking the game, and I can play other steam games online.
Any ideas anyone, I really want to play

I'm not sure I can really help you. But you can try to play with the AV turned off or maybe try reinstalling the mod from another source. (if you dl'ed a corrupt version)
